La Esclerosis Múltiple (EM) es una enfermedad adquirida, inflamatoria y desmielinizante del sistema nervioso central (SNC). En la EM, células del sistema inmunológico invaden al SNC y destruyen la mielina. La mielina es el tejido graso que envuelve el tejido nervioso en el cerebro y la medula espinal. En respuesta a este ataque, otras células del SNC producen una placa o lesión esclerótica alrededor de los lugares que han sido desmienlinizados (Kelley, Cellini & Lazarro, 2000; Jurg, 1997).
