Occupational participation of caregivers of children and adolescents with attention- deficit and hyperactivity disorder

Abstract

Caring for a child with attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder can have consequences in different occupational areas. This scoping review aimed at understanding the effects on social participation, work, and leisure of caregivers of children and adolescents with this diagnosis. A total of 22 articles published between 2003 and 2023, in Spanish and English, and indexed in the databases PubMed, Scopus, and Springer were reviewed. The findings show that caregivers experience impairment in the occupational areas studied. In working life, this includes leaving work or changing shifts. Social participation is affected, including reduced engagement in gatherings with friends, family, or outings outside the home. Leisure or pleasurable activities also decline, due to the time demands of caregiving and difficulties associated with doing those activities with children. The review concludes that the impact on occupational areas is diverse and relevant. Occupational therapy can play a valuable role in preventing and intervening in these situations.
