Author Guidelines

Author Guidelines

GiST – Education and Learning Research Journal welcomes original scholarly contributions that advance research, reflection, and innovation in education and learning, with a particular emphasis on language education, bilingual education, and teacher education.

Authors are expected to comply with the journal’s editorial, ethical, and formatting standards as outlined below. Detailed information on ethical conduct, research integrity, and the use of artificial intelligence is available in the Ethical Guidelines section of the journal website.

  1. Language of Publication

GiST publishes manuscripts exclusively in English. Submissions must be written in clear, academic English.

All manuscripts must include:

  • An abstract in English,
  • Keywords in English.

As part of the editorial process, the editorial team will prepare additional versions of the abstract and keywords in Spanish and Portuguese. The journal also reserves the right to add or refine keywords as needed to enhance the visibility, indexing, and discoverability of published articles.

These editorial interventions do not alter the content or scholarly claims of the manuscript.

  1. Types of Manuscripts Accepted

GiST accepts the following types of submissions:

Research Articles

Original empirical studies that contribute new knowledge to the field. These manuscripts typically include an introduction, a literature review, a methodology, results, a discussion, conclusions, and references.

Reflective Articles

Analytical or critical papers grounded in research or scholarly inquiry, offering theoretically informed reflections on educational issues or practices.

Review Articles

Systematic or integrative reviews that analyze and synthesize existing research to identify trends, advances, and gaps. Review articles are expected to demonstrate methodological rigor and typically include at least 50 references.

Case Studies

In-depth analyses of specific educational contexts, programs, or practices, supported by relevant theoretical and methodological frameworks.

Book Reviews

Critical reviews of recently published scholarly books relevant to the journal’s scope. Book reviews may be authored by faculty members or graduate students and are evaluated internally by the Editorial Committee or Editorial Team.

  1. Length

Manuscripts must be between 15 and 25 double-spaced pages, including references.

Submissions outside this range will be returned without review.

  1. Formatting and Style
  • Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word (.docx) or in formats fully compatible with .docx.
  • Authors must follow the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 7th edition.
  • General requirements:
    • Times New Roman, 12-point font
    • Double spacing throughout
    • Standard margins
    • APA-style headings (five levels, unnumbered)
    • In-text citations and reference list formatted according to APA 7

Minor formatting adjustments may be made during copyediting, but manuscripts must meet these standards at submission.

  1. Abstract and Keywords

Abstracts must be provided in English and should clearly state:

  • the purpose and scope of the manuscript,
  • methodological approach (where applicable),
  • main findings or arguments,
  • key conclusions.

A maximum of 10 keywords must be included.

  1. Originality, Exclusivity, and Preprints
  • Manuscripts must be original and not under consideration by another journal at the time of submission.
  • Authors are required to sign a Publishing Agreement, declaring the originality of the work.
  • Preprints are permitted. Authors must:
    • declare any preprint version of the manuscript, and
    • Provide the corresponding DOI or permanent identifier.

Responsibility for transparency regarding preprints rests entirely with the author.

  1. Use of Artificial Intelligence

GiST has a specific policy governing the use of artificial intelligence tools, available in the Ethical Guidelines section.

  • Authors must declare any use of AI tools by completing the AI Use Declaration Form (F1).
  • Failure to declare AI use will be interpreted as non-use.
  • AI tools may not replace human authorship, scholarly analysis, or academic responsibility.

  1. Tables, Figures, and Graphic Material
  • All tables, figures, and other visual materials must be clearly labeled, numbered, and explicitly referenced in the body of the text.
  • Authors must ensure that each table or figure is introduced and followed by connecting explanatory text. Visual elements should not appear consecutively without narrative discussion (e.g., table–table, figure–figure, table–figure) and must be integrated into the analytical or argumentative flow of the manuscript.
  • Authors are responsible for ensuring compliance with copyright and licensing requirements for all visual materials, including obtaining and submitting written permission when required.

  1. Authorship and Author Information

All listed authors must have made a substantial contribution to the manuscript and assume responsibility for its content.

GiST requires:

  • author biodata,
  • institutional affiliation,
  • ORCID iD,
  • completion of the Author Information Form (F3).

  1. Research Ethics

Research involving human participants must comply with applicable ethical standards.

  • Authors are responsible for determining whether institutional names or identifying details may be disclosed.
  • When required, written authorization must be obtained and retained by the author.
  • Detailed ethical requirements are outlined in the Ethical Guidelines.

  1. Diversity of Voices and Editorial Balance

GiST promotes bibliodiversity and equitable representation of scholars and perspectives.

  • Authors may not publish more than one article per issue, including as co-authors.
  • Authors may not publish in two consecutive issues.

These measures support diversity of voices and thematic balance within the journal.

  1. Peer Review Process

All research articles, reflective articles, review articles, and case studies undergo double-blind peer review by at least two external reviewers.

Final publication decisions are made by the Editor, informed by reviewer reports and editorial judgment.

Book reviews are evaluated internally.

  1. Privacy and Data Protection

Personal data collected during submission and review is used exclusively for editorial purposes and is not shared with third parties.
